Founded in 2014 by Alessandro Sarfatti, Astep creates and curates timeless lighting designs continuously redefining, refining, and remembering timeless designs while reintroducing new designs.
Astep is a design company born from a legacy of innovation, creativity, and respect for evolution.
Founded by Alessandro Sarfatti, it continues a family story that began with his grandfather, Gino Sarfatti, and his father, Riccardo Sarfatti—two visionaries who shaped the history of Italian lighting design. Guided by the belief that progress is built one meaningful step at a time, Astep embodies a forward motion rooted in reflection. Alessandro recalls his father’s words—“We must work in all directions, and in each one find a small amount of innovation”—as both a principle and a promise. Every creation by Astep is a continuation of this idea: that evolution is not about radical leaps, but about the quiet pursuit of something better, something more relevant and enduring.
At its heart, Astep bridges the timeless with the contemporary. The company draws from three generations of design knowledge and craftsmanship, merging this heritage with the possibilities offered by digital technology. Its name captures this essence—Astep is movement, a gesture toward progress, a commitment to continuous refinement. Each product stands as an homage to the kind of design that never ages: objects that retain their vitality and purpose regardless of era, enriching the way people live by advancing the dialogue between form, function, and emotion.
The story of Astep is inseparable from the story of Italian design itself. In 1939, Gino Sarfatti founded Arteluce, the company that first brought true design thinking into the world of lighting. His boldness and experimentation redefined how light could inhabit a space. Decades later, in 1978, Riccardo Sarfatti, alongside Sandra Severi and Paolo Rizzatto, founded Luceplan—a company that intertwined design and technology in a new, visionary way. Luceplan set a precedent for working with exceptional craftsmen and specialists, embodying the authenticity and ingenuity synonymous with “Made in Italy.” Through Arteluce and Luceplan, the Sarfatti family produced lighting icons that not only illuminated interiors but also expressed the evolution of how we live with light.
Astep now carries this lineage forward, creating new designs that integrate digital technologies with poetic simplicity and purpose. The company also revives classic works by Gino Sarfatti and Vittoriano Viganò, ensuring that the creative optimism and rigor of earlier decades remain alive and relevant. Each re-edited piece is more than a reproduction—it is a conversation across generations, a testament to how good design endures when it is rooted in meaning.
In a world increasingly defined by technology, Astep’s mission is to humanize innovation. Its collections explore how contemporary tools can enrich rather than dominate domestic life, enhancing comfort, sustainability, and emotional connection. Astep envisions homes where light is not just a function but an experience—where digital sophistication coexists with the tactile warmth of tradition. This vision respects the environment and the people who inhabit it, seeking balance rather than excess, refinement rather than novelty for its own sake.
Through its work, Astep aspires to shape a living landscape that is fluid, adaptable, and profoundly human. By uniting the minds of the past and the present, the company continues a story of evolution—a story where every object, every idea, and every light marks another step toward a more thoughtful and meaningful way of living.
