String Furniture Shelving Components: The String System is a Scandinavian shelving solution designed to solve all your storage challenges.

Create the shelf of your dreams by customizing your unique combination, mixing metal shelves, wooden shelves, and colorful elements. With endless possibilities, the String System adapts to your needs and style.

The String Shelving System is renowned for its distinctive wire panels, first introduced by architects Nisse Strinning and Kajsa Strinning in 1949. They designed the system as part of a competition to create a shelf that was affordable, easy to ship, and simple to assemble.

In the 1940s, bookshelves were a rare sight in Swedish homes. In 1949, to encourage book ownership, Bonnier’s public library announced a competition for a bookshelf design that was affordable, easy to ship, and easy to assemble.

Swedish architect Nisse Strinning and his wife Kajsa Strinning submitted the flexible String system, which featured easy-to-assemble wire panels and shelves. Their innovative design won the competition and quickly became a staple in Scandinavian design. By the 1950s and 1960s, String systems were installed in the offices of New York City’s UN Headquarters. The system also won a gold medal at the Milan Triennale as part of the exhibition at H55 and became the best-selling Scandinavian furniture piece in Germany.

After several decades of inactivity, String made a triumphant return in 2004. The original system was thoughtfully updated with new elements designed for modern homes. String Furniture also revamped its working practices to prioritize sustainability.

In 2009, the String system was classified as Applied Art under the Copyright Act, affirming its status as a functional and timeless work of art for both homes and commercial spaces.
