Hetkinen

Hetkinen embodies Finnish design in scent form. Finnish culture finds strength in calm and beauty in simplicity, where the air, the silence, and the light of nature shapes daily life. This, in turn, shaped Hetkinen’s philosophy that design should feel natural, honest, and enduring, resulting in aromatic objects that respect time and material. Hetkinen is also influenced by Japanese culture. Similar to Finland, Japan honors silence, simplicity, and nature’s cycle of seasons. Hetkinen scents are akin to the Japanese practice of shinrin yoku, also known as forest bathing. Designs are formed by the concept of ma, where intentional space gives meaning to form, and the aesthetic of yūgen, where beauty deepens in a way that cannot be fully described. We love how this Finnish design house describes their brand: “For us, scent is not decoration. It is [an] atmosphere. It is memories. It is a reminder that nature still lives around us and within us. Every composition starts in the forest: pine resin, birch leaf, juniper berry. From these notes, we design perfumes, candles and scent diffusers that carry a sophisticated stillness. Objects that bring the atmosphere of the forest into daily life. Hetkinen means a moment: space in the day when the air shifts and the forest feels close.” From scented candles and diffusers to room sprays and hand soap, Hetkinen makes aromatic objects that earn their place in the world by respecting the world they come from. In Japan, this mindset is referred to as mottainai, a deep respect for the life found within all things. Even the forms of the objects are inspired by nature. Candles are formed in refillable glass holders. Diffusers quietly release scent into the air, appearing more as a sculptural object than merely a source of scent.
