The best portable lamps for indoors and outdoors
If you’re looking to discover the best portable lamps for indoor and outdoor use, we have a list of our favorite portable lamps that respect the Scandinavian design ethos of functional design that doesn’t sacrifice aesthetics.
Each of these LED portable lamps can work wherever an outlet is out of reach: a side table in the middle of a spacious living room, a covered patio, a built-in bookshelf, a kitchen island, and anywhere else you need some light.
Porta Table Lamp by Normann Copenhagen
The Porta Table Lamp is Normann Copenhagen’s first-ever portable lamp. Made distinctive by its rounded, organic design cues, the cylinder base and elongated dome shape of the lampshade contribute to an aesthetic cohesiveness. The distinctive lampshade of the Porta accommodates the need for pleasant, atmospheric lighting in smaller settings. When turned at a 90-degree angle, the lampshade takes up less space, allowing it to easily fit into compact spaces such as windowsills, small café tables, or shelves.
Cordless and lightweight, bring your Porta from the kitchen to the patio to your favorite cozy corner. The dimmer allows you to set the lighting to match your mood. Porta recharges via a USB charging cable and can last up to 90 hours depending on the light setting. It comes in black, grey, and white.
Bellhop Portable LED Table Lamp by FLOS Lighting
The Bellhop Portable Lamp from FLOS can move around as much as a bellhop in a hotel. Completely wireless, the Bellhop can hold its charge for up to 24 hours, with 4 different lighting levels via the dimmer function positioned on the base. Beneath the base, there’s even a handy battery status indicator.
The modern design comes from Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby. It comes in six shades: white, grey, grey/blue, yellow, dark brown, and burnt orange.
Meridian Lamp by Ferm Living
The minimal geometric elements unite to form the Meridian Lamp. Introduced by Ferm Living in collaboration with Regular Company, the Meridian Lamp offers an intriguing and sculptural lighting solution that can be placed wherever you need it. With 4 different beautiful finishes, the Meridian Lamp can last up to 12 hours per charge. It’s dimmable, too!
We love it styled on a built-in shelf, a bedside table, or a kitchen island. The options are truly endless.
Carrie Portable LED Lamp by MENU Design
With a sleek, functional handle and a warm orb of light nestled gently in a basket-like base, the Carrie Portable Lamp is useful anywhere. Crafted in glass and metal – with a plastic base version perfect for outdoor use – it comes in a range of four beautiful colors conceived with freedom and flexibility in mind. The warm, ambient light is adjustable to three settings, and fully charged it will stay on for ten hours. We love styling the Carrie on a bookshelf that’s easily within reach when we want to take it outside for an ambient lighting source at night.
JWDA Portable Table Lamp by MENU Design
The JWDA series is one of MENU Design’s most popular lighting options, and we’re thrilled that MENU introduced a portable version of this iconic table lamp. Inspired by traditional oil lamps and imagined with a modern yet timeless look, the JWDA Portable Lamp has the freedom and flexibility to move anywhere you want. The small-scale design has the same elliptical glass shade as its predecessors, resting on a solid metal base with a brass dimmer switch to control the ambiance. Fitted with a concealed USB charger at the base, the diminutive design provides 10 hours of adjustable light when fully charged.
The JWDA Portable Table Lamp is named after its maker, Jonas Wagell, a Swedish architect and designer born in 1973. Wagell is widely revered for his modern product and furniture design comprising soft, minimalist shapes with a welcoming expression. Wagell’s Studio JWDA was founded in 2008 and is located in the Old Town of Stockholm, whilst recent clients and collaborative relations stretching from Scandinavia to China, Italy, and North America.
Column LED Table Lamp by MENU Design
Inspired by the bollards used to secure vessels to a jetty, the Column Portable Table Lamp combines technology and mood-setting style in a striking mushroom shape. Ideal for anywhere – from impromptu outdoor gatherings to tabletop candle substitute – it brings an inviting glow to spaces large and small. Offered in three beautiful finishes, the lightweight and durable design features a dimmable LED bulb that emits three settings of soft, diffused light.
The Column Portable Table Lamp is the brainchild of Norm Architects. Founded in Copenhagen in 2008 by Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen and Kasper Rønn, the Norm Architects name reflects the group’s emphasis on the importance of drawing inspiration from norms and traditions within architecture and design – particularly the Scandinavian design principles of timeless aesthetics and natural materials, and the modernist values of restraint and refinement. Guided by these principles, Norm Architects produce a design that unites materials and craftsmanship, while embodying beauty, history, and, most importantly, timeless simplicity, where there is nothing more to add or take away.
Phare LED Table Lamp by MENU Design
Initially designed for apartment no. 50 at Le Courbusier’s ‘Cité Radieuse’ in Marseille, a UNESCO world heritage site, the Phare Lamp’s aesthetic was centered on the idea to create a fully recyclable product that would become a versatile everyday companion. While the building’s flat roof caters to social needs, it lacks built-in lighting, which is where the Phare Lamp provides a remedy: lightweight and simple to transport, the design and materials take its inspiration from Cité Radieuse’s roof construction.
Crafted out of aluminum for 100% recyclability, durability, and lightness, the lamp’s sphere/shade, meanwhile, is made from injected plastic, offering long-term durability and safety (both for the lamp and user).
Phare transforms into a daily companion that can be freely placed, hung, or taken outside as long as conditions are dry according to need. Whether standing or hanging, Phare is not a lamp to be utilized in merely one spot but celebrated for its versatility. Its simple good taste and composition will suit all residences – from Le Corbusier’s establishment to your own home.
